Final Thoughts

On March 6, a brilliant sun splashed Saturday, 970 Loudoun voters came out to cast their ballots for our next Chairman of the LCRC. Standing there for the four hours that our canvass took place, shaking hands and talking with folks from all walks of life, it was encouraging and exciting to see the steady stream of people coming to cast their ballots. This is good news indeed for our Party.
I was also struck again by the wonder that is America, that here we assemble peacefully to choose our leaders, even at this the level of County Chairman. We all share the common conviction of our Founding Fathers that this democratic process is superior to all other forms of choosing leaders.
And so yesterday the choice was made. By a vote of 512-458, the voters chose Mark Sell to be the next LCRC Chair and he gets my congratulations for a hard fought race and well wishes for future success.
For those who voted for me, I send a heartfelt thank you – your emails and comments were encouraging beyond measure and I’ve made many new friends. For all those that worked so hard in our campaign I am forever grateful and am inspired by your dedication and leadership.
As I said over and over again during my campaign, there is a battle going on for the soul of America and Loudoun County. We must now come together and be about the fight before us.
Candace

Candace highlights Post article

Candace was quoted in the Washington Post’s look at the Loudoun County Budget on the front page of the Sunday Loudoun section (click here to read full article).  Candace delivered this same message to the Board during Wednesday’s public input session (see video below).

As the supervisors deliberate, area Republicans are ratcheting up the heat on supervisors.

Candace Strother of Ashburn, who is running for chairman of the Loudoun County Republican Committee, pointed to gains made by Republicans statewide last year in comments before the board at a budget hearing Wednesday. Gov. Robert F. McDonnell (R) swept all of Loudoun’s 71 precincts, finishing with 61 percent of the vote in November. Republicans also swept all five Loudoun delegate races, defeating two Democratic incumbents.

“All of these Republican candidates ran on a platform of fiscal responsibility, lower taxes and limited government. The people of Loudoun agreed,” Strother told the board.

She said consideration of a tax increase during a recession was “fiscally irresponsible and economically unsustainable while ignoring the will of the people.”

Candace speaks before Loudoun Board

On Wednesday 2/24, I joined other concerned citizens to speak before the Board of Supervisors. It is important that we all raise our voices in the public square and advocate for fiscal responsibility and lower taxes as our Board considers raising our taxes during this recession. Please consider attending the public input session this Saturday or sending an email to our Board.

Candace’s Letter to the Editor on Taxes

Candace’s Letter to the Editor on Taxes

Dear Editor:

As we enter another round of discussions and public input on the county’s budget, it is apparent that the Democrat-controlled Board of Supervisors is poised to raise the tax rate in Loudoun County for a second year in a row.

Last year, this same Democrat majority pushed through a 9 percent increase in the tax rate. Now it is set to raise the rate by an additional 15 percent from $1.245 to $1.40 per hundred dollars of assessed property value. Both tax increases are occurring amidst the worst recession in modern history. Some 24 months ago Loudoun County’s tax rate was $1.14, and if raised to $1.40 will have increased 24 percent in about two years. This is both fiscally irresponsible and economically unsustainable. Today when businesses are failing or laying off workers, it is irresponsible for the Democratic majority to add to their burden with these unreasonable taxes that will only aggravate the damage from this recession. Supervisors Eugene Delgaudio and Lori Waters, the only Republicans on the board, have made valiant attempts to stop these unreasonable tax increases. However, their two votes are thwarted by those on the board whose default position is to cast fiscal responsibility aside and raise our taxes. This is the same failed policy and lack of common sense economics we are seeing from the Congressional Democrat majority that has so many Americans deeply concerned and fearful about the direction of our country.

Forbes Magazine recently noted that Loudoun has the highest tax rates in “the South” and this is before this latest round of fiscal irresponsibility. I ask you to let this board know with your letters and e-mails that the residents of Loudoun County strongly object to the board Democrats’ crusade to make Loudoun County the most expensive place to live in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Candace Strother, Ashburn

Happy President’s Day

Happy President’s Day

Dear Friends and Fellow Republicans,

As we pause on this President’s Day to reflect on the American presidency, it is a good time to contrast how two Presidents chose to handle the economic challenges confronting their Administrations. In 1980, our country was in an economic mess, unemployment and inflation was rising, taxes were high and the country was in a malaise. When our current President took office in 2008, our economy was in another mess, unemployment was rising, people were losing their homes and many companies were going out of business.

President Reagan cut taxes, cut government spending, provided incentives for the entrepreneurial spirit to flourish and by 1984 in what was one of the most famous political ads in history the country heralded that it was “Morning Again in America”. President Reagan was reelected in a landslide and our economic engine was the envy of the world.

President Obama in contrast has increased federal spending, and increased the role of the federal government, all of which is adding trillions to our debt. Companies are getting bailouts and small business owners are being choked out of business unable to get loans to make payroll. Unemployment remains high and our citizens are fed up.

Presidential policy matters not just to the nation at large but to local communities as well. Here in Loudoun, our Democrat controlled Board of Supervisors is poised to follow this President’s mistakes and raise taxes in the midst of one of the worst economic recessions in history. This will put added burdens on businesses already strapped and will only prolong their inability to create more jobs.

President Reagan believed in the individual’s ability to unleash prosperity, our current President believes the government can best do that. Both cannot be right. We have evidence that President Reagan’s approach worked and evidence from countless countries around the world that President Obama’s approach will lead to greater stagnation.

I am running for LCRC Chair because having worked for President Ronald Reagan and been a part of the movement that helped turn our country around then, I want to lead our local Party to elect principled conservatives so we can turn things around here in Loudoun now.

It will require hard work in 2010 to have a winning 10th District Congressional race and in 2011 to elect conservatives to the Board of Supervisors. But it is well worth it because come 2012, we want to be positioned to take our country back and let it again be Morning in America.
